The story is about a care taker who takes care of an old man but can't stand the look of his eye and because the eye bothers him so much , the narrator plans on killing the old man . The setting is in the old man's bedroom in the middle of the night .
The narrator has never been kinder to the old man then the week of the murder . Each night at 12 he would watch the old man and see if the old man's eye is open. The narrator serves as the antagonist in the story.

On the 8th night The narrator wakes up the old man and continues to move in . The narrator and the old man have a one hour stand off and then the narrator checks to see if the old man's eye is open . The narrator hears a low, dull, quick sound which symbolizes his anxiety.The narrator thinks the old man's heart beat is getting louder and is afraid that the heart beat would be heard by a neighbor .The author uses foreshadowing and personification to show the readers that the old man is about to die .
I did it , I did it ! I killed the old man !
On the 8th night the narrator kills the old man . The narrator kills the old man by smuggling the old man with his own mattress.
"Haha " they wont suspect a thing
after he suffocates the old man he dismembers the body and hides the body parts under the floor boards. At four o'clock in the morning the police arrive because one of the neighbors heard a shriek. The narrator allows the police to search the house because he is so overly confident and invites the police to sit. The narrator puts a chair on top of the floorboards were he hid the body.He suddenly starts to hear the old man's heart beat and as the sound gets louder his anxiety grows and becomes more anxious .

There is internal conflict when the narrator can't stand the sound of his own guilt and finally confesses to murdering the old man.
