The narrator claims he is very nervous, very dreadfully nervous, and then explains how calmly he can tell us the story. He claims he loved the old man, the old man had never hurt the narrator but the old man's "vulture eye" bothered the narrator to the point where he felt the need to kill the old man.
Finally he's dead , stone dead!
The narrator wants to prove his sanity he does not want people thinking he is mad.The narrator was very nice to the old man for a whole week. Every night at midnight he would watch the old man to hopefully see the old man's "vulture eye". The narrator used a lantern to watch the old man at night, he opened the lantern just enough so a small sliver of light was shining into the old man's bedroom just enough to see his "vulture eye". The narrator asked the old man every day how he had slept that night.
On the 8th night of stalking the old man the narrator wakes the old man by slipping his thumb on the lantern. The narrator continues into the old man's chamber and the narrator and old man have a 1 hour stand off creating suspense. The narrator then opens the lantern and sees that the old man's "vulture eye" is open. He hears a low dull quick sound thinking the sound is the old man's heartbeat creating an internal conflict within the narrator. The sound increased along with the narrator' anxiety making the narrator think the neighbors could hear the sound.
The antagonist (narrator) finally gains the courage to kill the old man at the dead of night. The narrator shows personification and foreshadowing when he says death stalked the old man. The narrator suffocates the old man with the old man's mattress. The old man was stone dead.
The narrator dismembers the body in the bathtub and then washes away all the blood. He hides the body parts under the floorboards. The narrator is feeling proud that he has completed the plan. The police arrive because the neighbors heard a shriek from inside the old man's house. The narrator invites the police to search the old man's home. The narrator and the police sit down while the narrator made sure to sit right on top of the body. He starts to think he can hear the old man'as heart beat ans starts to flip out symbolizing the narrator's guilt.
I completed the plan. Yay!
Finally the narrator couldn't take it anymore the sound began to get louder and louder. He thought the police could hear the old man's heart beat and was mocking the narrator. He finally confesses to the murder because his own guilt got to him.
I can't take it any longer i confess. I murdered the old man!
