  • I was never nicer to the old man then the week before i killed him.
  • Rising  Action 2
  • There came to my ears a low dull quick sound.
  •  The setting is an old mans house at midnight. The story takes place in the old mans chamber's at night the Author describes a scary suspenseful mood. There are two characters an old man and the old mans care taker. The narrator/care taker is planning to kill the old man because he is bothered by the old mans vulture eye this sets up a tense suspenseful mood. 
  • Climax
  • The narrator/antagonist is now planning on killing the old man. Throughout the whole week before he killed the old man he was very nice to him. According to the narrator the old man had never wronged him it was just his evil vulture eye that bothered him. the narrator now tries to prove how sane he is by explaining how he went about watching the old man sleep. The narrator explains how he watched him sleep every night  at mid night to see if the vulture eye was open.
  • Falling Action
  •     The narrator explains how each morning he would ask the old man how he slept to make sure the old man didn't suspect anything. On the eight night he shined a light on the old man and made a loud noise. This woke the old man up and he finally opened his vulture eye. This along with a strange low quick dull sound the narrator heard gave him the rage he needed to go for it.
  • Resolution
  • Hearken its the beating of his hideous heart.
  • In the climax the narrator jumps at the old man. The old man screeches and then the narrator finally kills him with a mattress.  The narrator stands over the dead body and starts to hear the sound again. 
  • At this point the narrator tries to prove further hoe sane he is. He attempts to do this by explaining to us how he disposed of the body. The narrator said he took the body and chopped it into pieces. Then he drained the body of its blood in a bath tub. Finally  the narrator stuffs the old mans body under the floor boards in the old mans chamber.
  • The resolution is when the police show up to the house on a noise complaint and the confident narrator invites them in. He gets an anxiety attack and confesses to the crime.
