Rising Action Two
I drink, to the buried that repose around us.
True... The Amontillado!
It is the 17th century in Italy during carnival season. Montresor is desired to get revenge. This means that Montresor wants to get revenge on Fortunato because he insulted him in some way.
Montresor influences Fortunato to come down in his catacombs to drink some Amontillado. Fortunato is dressed up as a jester. This is ironic because Fortunato is dressed as a fool who is about to be fooled. Montresor is dressed like a vampire. This symbolises that something bad is going to happen.
*Montresor screaming back
Montresor! *Fortunato continues screaming
Fortunato and Montresor make it down to the catacombs. Montresor keeps offering Fortunato more and more wine so he will get drunk. The nitre on the walls is making Fortunatos cold even worse. The irony is that Fortunato won't die of a cough, even though he does die.
For half a century no mortal has disturbed them.
Motresor chains up Fortunato in a niche that he made. Fortunato is too drunk to realize what is happening. The nitre is making Fortunatos cough worse.
Montresor starts to build a wall where Fortunato is chained. Fortunato begins to sober up and starts to realize what is happening. He begins to jingle the chains and screaming. Montressor begins screaming back. The irony is that every time Fortunatos bells on his hat jingles, it symbolizes that he has been tricked.
Montresor leaves Fortunato in the catacombs, where he dies. It has been fifty years since the death of Fortunato. Montresor finally confesses many years later. The theme is: A need for revenge is a strong motivation.
