In the beginning of the story, Montesquieu vows revenge at Fortunato for insulting and injuring him. This takes place in Italy during the 17th Century. It is during the carnival that he decides to do this.
Huh? What are you doing?
Montesquieu confronts Fortunato, which he is wearing a jester costume, during carnival. He tells Fortunato compliments and asks him to test a expensive wine called a Amontillado. He uses the Idea of Lucracy to manipulate Fortunato into coming into the catacombs
Montesquieu leads Fortunato deeper into the catacombs. Fortunatos cold gets worse because of he nitre on the walls. Montesquieu gives Fortunato more wine to make him even more drunk. They end up in the deepest part of the catacomb where there is a small niche waiting.
Nobody has found fortunato for more than 50 years!
Montesquieu leads Fortunato into the niche and chains him to the walls. Fortunato is drunk and doesnt understand what is happening.
Fortunato begins to sober up and Montesquieu, using his materials, begins building up a wall to the entrance of the niche. Fortunato jangles his chains and screams, Montesquieu screams back. Montesquieu calls Fortunatos name but gets no responce. Fortunato has died.
Montesquieu leaves Fortunato in the catacombs. Nobody has found fortunato for more that 50 years.
