Montresor is thinking about all of the times that Fortunato has insulted him. ''The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.'' Montresor is going over his plan to get revenge on Fortunato. ''I must not only punish but punish with impunity.''
Montresor encounters Fortunato at the carnival and tells him about the Amontillado he has "purchased". He flatters Fortunato with compliments about his outfit. Montresor tells Fortunato that if he's to busy that he can always get Luchresi to come with him. Fortunato is delighted to get the chance to come with Montresor to go see the Amontillado.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!
For the love of god Montresor!
Fortunato's cough is starting to get worse the deeper they go into the catacombs. Montresor keeps suggesting to go back cause the nitre is not good for him at his state, but Fontunato doesn't want to go back so Montresor just keeps giving him more wine. They toast to a long life and to the Amontillado. Fortunato gets more and more drunk the deeper they go into the catacombs.
He hasn't been seen in 50 years

''A very good joke, indeed — an excellent jest. We will have many a rich laugh about it at the palazzo..."
Montresor begins to build the block wall. Fortunato starts screaming at Montresor so Montresor screams back at him. "A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form, seemed to thrust me violently back." For a moment Montresor hesitates to continue. "For a brief moment I hesitated, I trembled... I began to grope with it about the recess; but the thought of an instant reassured me." Fortunato ends up suffocating and dying from the nitre and being enclosed in.
After the incident was done, Montresor returned back to the carnival as if nothing had happened. Nobody suspected anything, but his family was left heartbroken over the fact that Fortunato was nowhere to be found. Montresor is now just finally confessing of his crime to his grandson.
