It is the 17th century in Italy during carnival season. A man named Montressor has been injured and insulted by a man named Fortunado. Montressor vows revenge on Fortunado for what he has done.
Why are you chaining me up?
Montressor finds Fortunado at the carnival and compliments him. Fortunado is dressed as a jester and is drunk. Montressor then tells Fortunado about the Amontillado he has and says that Luchressi will taste it with him. Fortunado then denied and said that he will drink the Amontillado. Then, Montressor showed him the way into his catacombs.
As they are walking in the catacombs, Fortunado seems to have a cold and it is getting worse. Montressor asks to go back but Fortunado says no. As they get closer, Montressor keeps giving Fortunado more and more wine. They arrive at the deepest part of the catacombs and Montressor lets Fortunado go into an opening which has the "Amontillado".

Fortunado walks in the small room to look for the Amontillado. Then, Montressor starts to chain Fortunado to the wall. Fortunado thinks it is a joke and plays along with it. After he chained Fortunado, Montressor starts to gather up bricks.
Montressor starts to pile up bricks in the entrance to the little room Fortunado is chained to. Then, Fortunado starts to realize what he is doing and asks to let him go. Fortunado starts to jangle his chains and scream at Montressor and Montressor screams back at him. He got one last look at Fortunado before he finished the wall. Then, after he couldn't hear Fortunado, Montressor yelled his name, but there came no response.
For more than 50 years, no one has found Fortunado. Montressor had a very strong motive. The theme of the story is the need of revenge being a strong motivator. The internal conflict is Montressors need for revenge on Fortunado.
