The narrator wants to get revenge on Fortunato because he has had enough of Fortunato making fun of him.
Fortunato and the narrator meet at a carnival that is happening in town and the narrator tries to persuade Fortunato to taste a pipe of Amontillado to test it if it real or not.
Fortunato is hesitant at first, but the narrator then tells him he will get his wine tasting enemy to do the job instead, and he gives in because he is too proud of his work.
The narrator and Fortunato go down to the narrators chambers and Fortunato starts coughing because of the niter. The narrator said '' lets go back you're sick'' but Fortunato is too proud of his work.
The narrator then grabs fortunato to chain him to a wall and Fortunato does not understand what is going on. The narrator builds a wall around him so that he can not see Fortunato.
Fortunato calls for help but the narrator does not help. He calls again for help and still no reply. Fortunatos calls eventually stop and the narrator says, "Fortunato?" no answer, again he calls "Fortunato?" and still no reply. He is now satisfied and he retaliated as he said he would.
