  • Do you want to come with me to taste an Amontillado?
  • Rising Action 2
  • "Amontillado is right through that opening."
  • This story takes place in the 17th Century Italy. It's Carnival season. The narrator, Montressor, wants revenge for the thousands of injuries and insults Fortunato had put on him.
  • Climax
  • Montressor encounters Fortunato at the Carnival. Montressor compliments Fortunato even though he doesn't mean what he is saying. Montressor asks Fortunato if he wants to try the Amontillado that he has in the catacombs of his house. Fortunato is suspicious of Montressor owning a case of Amontillado until Montressor says that he will ask Luchressi for help instead. Fortunato agrees to follow Montressor.
  • Falling Action
  • "In pace requiescat!"
  • They enter the catacombs. Once in the catacombs, Fortunato starts coughing a lot. He gets more and more drunk each time Montressor gives him more alcohol. Montressor keeps giving empathy about Fortunato's cough and says that he can get Luchressi to taste the Amontillado, which makes Fortunato more determined. Montressor's costume is symbolic of the Grim Reaper leading his victim to his death. They finally get to the end of the catacombs.
  • Resolution
  • It was time for the plan to kill Fortunato to be in action. Once Montressor gets Fortunato to the end of the catacombs, Montressor brings Fortunato into a separate room. He chains Fortunato to the wall.
  • Montressor is using bricks to close the opening of the room to trap him in. Finally, Fortunato starts to sober up and understand what Montressor is doing. Fortunato starts screaming, and Montressor screams back. Once the last block is in place, Fortunato suffocates to death. Fortunato's name is ironic because his death was unfortunate.
  • It has been 50 years since the murder of Fortunato. Montressor gets away with the murder but confesses. The external conflict of the story is Montressor vs. Fortunato. The internal conflict of the story is the need for revenge against Fortunato because of the bad things he has done to Montressor. The theme of this book is the need for revenge is a strong motivator.
