The setting of the story is in Italy, at a carnival. The story takes place in Montresor's room, on his deathbed. He tells the story of how he murdered Fortunato and got away with it.
In the first rising action, Montresor encounters Fortunato at the carnival and tells him about the Amontillado he has. He compliments Fortunato but this is ironic because he is dressed as a jester. He tells him that he can just have Luchressi taste it, to manipulate him into going into the catacombs.
In the second rising action, they are going to the catacombs but the nitre is bad for Fortunato's cough, it makes it worse. Montresor continuously gives Fortunato more wine to make him drunk. He keeps offering that he could get Luchressi so the nitre doesn't make his cough worse but he refuses. They make it to the deepest part of the catacombs, and he sees the room he built ahead of time.
In the climax, Montresor chains Fortunato to the wall.
In the falling action, Fortunato begins to sober up. Montresor begins to build a wall using his materials. Fortunato begins jangling the chains and screaming so Montresor screams back. Before Montresor places the last block, he takes one last look at Fortunato, he dies.
The resolution is that no one has found Fortunato for 50 or more years. The theme of the story is
