2 Rising Action
HELLO is anybody there?
The narrator(who is the antagonist) tells us that he's not insane, just nervous and diseased. The narrator then goes on to tell us how calmly he can tell us the story. The narrator also claims he loves the old man but wants to kill him. This proves that the narrator is unreliable.
I can't breath what are you doing.
i'm murdering you AHAHAHAHA.
The narrator's goal is to prove his sanity, this is his internal conflict. The narrator didn't want the old man to suspect any thing. For the week leading up to the old man's death the narrator was never kinder to him. At the dead hour of night(foreshadowing) he would look in on the old man creating suspense. The narrator would open the lantern to see if the old man's eye was open. Every morning he asked the old man how he slept.
HA I'll never have to look at that creepy eye again.
On the 8th night, death was stalking the old man(personification). The narrator wakes up the old man but still continues into the room. The narrator stands still for an hour and watches the old man's anxiety rise. Then the narrator opens the lantern and sees the old man's eye is open. Then the narrator starts to hear a low, dull, quick sound which he believes is the old man's heartbeat but really symbolizes the narrator's guilt and anxiety. The narrator thinks the heart beat is getting louder and is scared it will be heard by a neighbor.
Fine I killed the old man.
On the 8th night the narrator finally kills the old man. He killed the old man by suffocating him with a mattress.
After committing the murder, he dismembers the body and cuts it up in the bath tub. He then hides the body parts under the floor board. The police arrived because a neighbor heard a shriek. The police search the house and the narrator invites them to sit. The narrator places his chair on top of the body. The narrator starts to hear the "Old Man's heart beat". The narrator flips out as the sound keeps getting louder.
I never would have guessed.
After agonizing for a while the Narrator confesses to the murder. This is because he couldn't stand the sound of the "Old Man's heart beat " which is really just his anxiety and guilt from committing the murder.
