The Narrator (antagonist) tells us that he is dreadfully nervous and that his disease has sharpened his senses.The old man had never wronged the narrator he had actually loved him.It was the eye the narrator disliked the old mans eye looked like a vultures eye with a film over it.
YESSSSS Ive killed him ive finally done the deed.
The narrator tries to prove to us that he is sane and kind to the man for a whole week.At 12:00 he would pop his head into the old mans chamber with a lantern and watch him sleep.He would open lantern to check to see if the old mans eye was open.He explains how slowly and cautiously he would open the lantern and put his head in.Narrator would always ask how the old man slept to see if he knew he was in his room.This is where the suspense starts to build.
On the 8th nigh the narrator wakes up old man because his thumb slipped on the lantern then the old man sprung up in bead and says "who's there?". For an hour the old man sits up in bed and narrator doesn't move a muscle while hes in the room.The narrator opens lantern to see if the old mans eye is open. He starts to hear a low , dull , quick sound that is an example of symbolism because it represents his anxiety and guilt. He believes that the sound keeps getting louder then has a new anxiety that the sound can be heard by other people. Death had been stalking the old man and this is a form of personification.
Iam guilty he is under the floor boards.
At the dead hour of the night was previously used to show foreshadowing of the old mans death.On the 8th night the narrator kills the old man by suffocating him with mattress and after he did the deed he smiled gaily.
The narrator dismembers the corpse in a bath tub so blood wouldn't get everywhere and hides the body under the floor boards.The police arrive at the home because the next door neighbors hear a shriek.The narrator invites the police in and lets them search because hes so confident that he hid the body well enough that there is no way they will find it. Narrator sits in the room right on top of the planks where he hid the body.He starts to hear what he thinks in the old mans heart but in reality its his own. He starts to freak out at the sound gets louder and louder.

Narrator confesses to the murder by telling the police hes guilty and to look under the floor boards. He confesses to the murder because he cant stand the sound of the beating heart which really is his own guilt. Him being overwhelmed with guilt and anxiety shows internal conflict.
