At the beginning of the story, the Narrator tells us he is not mad just nervous. He then tells us that he has a disease but the disease does that dull his senses in sharpens them. He goes on to say how calmly he can tell the story.
The narrator tells us that its impossible to say how the idea entered his brain. Then the Narrator says that he loved the old man, he had never wronged him or given him insult. He says it is his eye, he has the eye of a vulture and it haunted him day and night, so gradually he made up his mind to take the life of the old man. Trying to prove his sanity, the Narrator says, "you fancy me mad, madmen know nothing". He begins to tell the reader the plan leading up to murder. This includes being kind to the old man for a week, asking him how he slept in an attempt to see if the old man suspected anything and looking in on him every night at midnight to see if the vulture eye was open.

On the eight night, the Narrator chuckles at the old man and wakes him up . The old man sits up in his bed and the Narrator and the old man have a one hour standoff. After the one hour standoff between the old man and the Narrator, the Narrator opens his lantern to see if the vulture eye is open. The Narrator sees the eye is open and hears a low dull quick and thinks its the old man heart beat. When the Narrator hears the heartbeat and starts to have and anxiety attack, The heart beat starts to get louder.
The narrators rage builds as the heartbeat gets louder. Once the narrator cant take the rage and he leaps into the old mans room and pulls him onto the floor and smothers him with his mattress.

After the narrator kills the old man he dismembers the body. He dismembers it by cutting off his limbs in the bathtub so no blood would be seen. He then hides the body under the floor in the old mans room. At four o'clock in the morning the police show up at his door and tell him the neighbors heard a scream and ask to search the house. They search the house and find nothing and the narrator feels so cocky he ask them for a drink and he takes them to the old mans room and places the chars over the old mans body.
As time goes bye the narrator starts to have an internal conflict and wishes them gone. He believes he hears the old mans heart beat. The narrator starts to go crazy and paces around the room, he questions if the police hear the heartbeat and he stars to loose his mind and he is slamming the chair and pacing faster. The police are laughing and having a conversation and the narrator thinks that they are mocking him. Finally he cant take it anymore so he admits to killing the old man and shows them were he put the body.
