The narrator is the antagonist of the story. The setting takes place in the old mans house. The narrator claims that he loved the old man and only killed him because of his " vulture eye."
The narrator attempts to prove his sanity to the reader by telling them that he is not mad because he was able to plan the old mans murder. The plan begins with the narrator going to the old mans room at midnight every night for seven nights. Once the narrator has his head through the door, he opens the lantern to see if the old mans eye is open. Every morning, he would ask the old man how he slept throughout the nights of watching him. The author has the narrator stalk the old man for seven nights in order to build suspense.
On the eighth night, when the narrator goes to spy on the old man, the old man is awakened from the narrator chuckling at how sneaky he is. The narrator then stands at the door way for an hour before he moves a muscle after an hour he barley opens the lantern but just enough to see the old mans eye in order to get that fire he needs to the deed of killing the old man.
The narrator finally goes to move and then kills the old man by suffocating him with a bed. and then later on goes to the bath room and cuts off his arms legs and head in the tub and then washes the blood away
