  • Oh Fortunado! Could you come taste my Amontillado?
  • Rising Action 2
  • I drink to your long life.
  • Montressor wanted to get revenge on Fortunado for insulting and injuring him. Montressor had a clever plan to get revenge. He was going to go to the carnival and get Fortunado to come with him down to the catacombs Montressor has below his huge house.
  • Climax
  • Why have you chained me?
  • Montressor encounters Fortunado at the carnival that was going on. Fortunado is in a jester costume he was also really drunk. Montressor is in a grim reaper which is symbolic because it represents death. The name Fortunado means fortunate one. Montressor tells Fortunado he has Amontillado down in his catacombs so he would come with him. Fortunado also has a bad cold. Montressor manipulates Fortunado by telling him that Luchresi can just taste the Amontillado.
  • Falling Action
  • The catacombs were very damp and had nitre all over them which made Fortunado's cough worse. Fortunado kept giving Montressor wine to make him more drunk. Montressor fakes empathy and encourages Fortunado to go back bacause of his bad cough. Montressor says he will not die of a cough which is really ironic. Later on they finally get to the deepest part of the catacombs where there is a small opening. Montressor tells Fortunado the wine is in there.
  • Resolution
  • Once Fortunado goes to find the wine Montressor chains him to the wall. Montressor had created a niche in depths of the catacombs just big enough to fit Fortunado. Fortunado was still drunk so he hadn't realized what was happening.
  • Once Fortunado is chained to the wall, Montressor begins to build a wall over the entrance of the niche so that Fortunado would be stuck inside. Fortunado starts to sobers up and realizes what was happening. He starts yelling and Montressor replied yelling louder and longer than Fortunado. When Montressor continues building the mall Fortunado then thought it was all a game and said "Let us be gone", Montressor just replying with "Yes, let us be gone." This is ironic because they aren't going anywhere. When Montressor finishes building the wall a while later the bells on Fortunado's costume jingle meaning he died.
  • 50 years later....
  • It's been 50 years since Forunado's death. No one has disturbed the bones piled in front of the wall built around Fortunado. The theme of The Cask of Amontillado is how the need for revenge is a really strong motivator. The internal conflict was Montressor's need for revenge.
