  • In this story the narrator serves as the antagonist. Throughout the story he tries to proves that he is not mad, telling us how how he committed the murder calmly. The story takes place at the old man's house, specifically in his chamber at the middle of the night. 
  • Climax 
  • Your death hour has come
  • In the rising action the narrator tries to prove his sanity to us by describing his plan. Every night, at 12 am, he went to old man's bedroom to check on him. He opened the lantern in order to see if the eye was open. In the morning, when the old man was awake, he ask him how he slept last night.  he makes clear that was never kinder to the old man than the week he kill him. 
  • Falling Action 
  •    In the 8th night the narrator goes to the old man's bedroom to check on him, but, he accidentally wakes him up. After the old man wakes up he stands up and sits on the bed to see if someone was there. The narrator stays in the same place without moving for an hour like the old man. The narrator opens the lantern and sees that the old man's eye was open. As the narrator is watching the old man, he starts  to hear a low, dull, quick sound and believes that is the old man's heartbeat. the narrator thinks that the old man heartbeat is getting louder because of his terror and believes it could be hear by a neighbor.  The low, dull, quick sound symbolizes the narrator anxiety. The narrator uses foreshadowing to show the death hour of the night for the old man. The narrator personifies death as if it is stalking the old man. 
  • Resolution 
  • one of your neighbor heard a shriek last night  
  • Don´t worry it was mine. I was having a bad dream 
  • In the climax the suspense is build when the narrator kills the old man. The narrator kills the old man by suffocating him with a mattress 
  • After the narrator kills the old man, he dismembers the body parts in the bath tub. when he was done he hide the parts under the floorboard so no human eye could see it. At  4 am, the police arrives to search the house because one neighbor heard a shriek coming from the old man's house.the narrator let them in to search the house and invites them invites them to sit.  The narrator and the police where sitting on chairs in top of where he hide the body parts. while he was talking, the narrator stars to hear the ''old man's heartbeat''. e gets a little nervous and starts talking a little bit louder every time. he keeps talking, flipping around the chair, trying to stop the sound but it keeps getting louder. 
  • I´m going to hide the body parts in the floor
  • In the resolution the narrator confesses to the murder because he can't stand to the heartbeat anymore. The internal conflict is his guilt.
