Rising Action 2
We will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We will go back; you will be ill, and I cannot be responsible. Besides, there is Luchresi — "
The cough's a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough."
It is the 17th century in Italy. The narrator, also known as Montressor, is telling us about how Fortunato has insulted him in many ways, and that he was planning his revenge.
"Ha! ha! ha! — he! he! he! — a very good joke, indeed — an excellent jest. We will have many a rich laugh about it at the palazzo — he! he! he! — over our wine — he! he! he!"
Montressor heads to the carnival and meets Fortunato, dressed as a fool and is drunk. Montressor plans on saying he has an Amontillado deep in his catacombs, then uses Luchresi telling Fortunato he doesn't need him and can ask help from another "expert" making Fortunato jealous and makes him go with Montressor.
Montressor and Fortunato head deeper into thee catacombs. Montressor keeps giving Fortunato wine to make him more drunk, making him worse, and with the nitre all around, his cold is getting worse too.
Once Fortunato and Montressor reach the vaults, Montressor chains Fortunato the wall. Fortunato, still drunk, is confused and doesn't know what is happening and thinks that Montressor is playing a joke on him.
Once Fortunato is chained, Montressor begins building a wall through the entrance so he is trapped inside. When Fortunato gets sober and realizes what is happening, he begins shaking the chains and screaming, Montressor mocks him by screaming back.
Montressor leaves Fortunato in the catacombs. 50 years later, he confesses that he has left Fortunato in the catacombs to die.
