The antagonist in the story is our narrator. The narrator tries to prove that he s not mad. Yet he says he has a disease that sharpens his senses. He says how calmly he can tell us the story about the old man that he killed.
The narrator shows how ' wise ' he is by telling how he went to work. He was never kinder to the old man the whole week before he killed him. For eight nights the narrator watched him sleep. Everytime he went to watch the old man with a lantern his eye was close, therefore he could never commit the crime. He would ask the old man how he passed the night,
On the eighth night he was more cautious then the other nights, yet he was overconfident. The narrator chuckled at the old mans ignorance. The narrator went to open the lantern but slipped his hand upon it. That noise made the old man awake & groan out " who's there " . That ended it off to a one hour stand off between them. The suspense was reaching it's peak. death has been stalking the old man.
When the narrator saw the old mans eye he leaped in the room and yelled, the old man shrieked. The narrator suffocates the old man with a matress.
The narrator cuts up the old mans body in a bathtub, and hides the body under the floorboards of the house. Four o'clock, still dark as midnight. The police showed up at the door. A shriek had been heard by a neighbor . The narrator was overconfident, he let the 3 men inside & let them search well. He let all the police officers sit, and the narrator sat right above the corpse of the victim.
The narrator started hearing a ringing in his ears, he thought it was the old mans heart, He began to get pale, and talked more fluently. He swung the chair. The police chatted pleasantly and smiled. He suddenly said, " dissemble no more! i admit the deed! tear up the planks! here, here!
