He wanted to kill the old man because of his eye. At the old mans house specificaly in the middle of the night in the old mans chambers. Narrator tells us he is not mad just nervous but can tellus the story calmly.
Ive been waiting for this moment
Narrator wants to prove his sonity. He was kind to the old man for a whole week. At 12 am narrator would look in the old mans room. When he was in his room he would open the lantern to see if eye was open. Every morning, the ataginest would ask the old man every morning how he slept to see if he suspected anything.
time to hide him under the floor boards
On the 8th night, the narrator wakes the old man up when he laughs and continues to walk in the room. For the next hour, the old man sits awake in bed while the narrator remains perfectly still inside of the old mans room. After an hour, the narrator opens lantern to see if old mans eye was open. Narrator hears low, dull, quick sound and thinks its the old mans heart beating. Narrator thinks the beat is getting louder. Now inside, Narrator thinks the heartbeat is the old mans and one of the neibhors might hear it but ,its his own heartbeat.
The suspencse finally reaches the highest point and the narrator cant stand the sound any longer.The narrator kills the old man by suffercating him with a matress.
Once the narrator kills the old man he dismembers the body in the bathtub. And the he hides the body under the floor boards in his house. Next the police arrive after neibhors heard a shriek at his house. Police ask to search and the narrator invites them into sit. The narrator and the police all sit on the chair that had the body under it. Narrator starts to hear old mans heart beat kicking in. Narrator flips out and starts pacing, throws chair across the room as the sound of the heartbeat is getting louder.

Narrator confesses to the murder because he cant stand the sound of the heart beat. The symbolism of him hearing the heart beat is the narrators own guilt. The narrators internal conflict gets the best of him.
