  • Exposition
  • "I would be avenged; this was a point definitely, settled — but the very definitiveness with which it was resolved precluded the idea of risk."
  • Rising Action One
  • "How?" said he. "Amontillado, A pipe? Impossible! And in the middle of the carnival!"
  • "I have my doubts,"..
  • Rising Action Two
  • "I drink," he said, "to the buried that repose around us."
  • "And I to your long life."
  • "Drink," I said, presenting him the wine.
  • The setting of the story is in the 17th Century Italy, during Italy's carnival season. Montresor has vow to take revenge on Fortunato. Montresor is our narrator that wants to take revenge on Fortunato for insulting him. Fortunato is a wine expert.
  • Climax
  • "Pass your hand," I said, "over the wall; you cannot help feeling the nitre. Indeed, it is very damp. Once more let me implore you to return. No? Then I must positively leave you. But I must first render you all the little attentions in my power."
  • Montresor encounters Fortunato at the carnival. Fortunato is dress as a jester. This to show that Fortunato is going to get fooled. Montresor compliments Fortunato about how he looked. Then, Montresor tells Fortunato about the Amontillado he has bought, trickes Fortunato by saying that he is going to see Luchresi and tell him to try his wine, just to make Fortunato want to come. Montresor is dressed in all black so no one will notice him taking Fortunato away. Montresor is dressed in all black and black symbolizes death.
  • Falling Action
  • ""Ha! ha! ha! — he! he! he! "
  • Once in the catacombs the nitre was making Fortunato's cold worse. The catacombs symbolizes Fortunato's grave/death. Montresor keeps giving wine to Fortunato to get him more drunk but tells Fortunato that the wine will help him with the cold that he has. Montresor fakes his empathy and encouges Fortunato to go back to the carnival.
  • Resolution
  • " Against the new masonry I re-erected the old rampart of bones. For the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them. In pace requiescat!"
  • There was a small little niche that Montresor build ahead of time. Fortunato was too drunk to figure out what was happening to him. Montresor chains Fortunato to the wall of the small room.
  • "The Amontillado!" ejaculated my friend, not yet recovered from his astonishment."
  • Fortunato startes to sober up. Montresor uses his materials to begin to build a wall. Fortunato starts screaming, and Montresor screams back at him. Every time Fortunato screamed, the scream held Montresor back in building the wall. Before he finish he took a last look of Fortunato. When Montresor calles Fortunato's name he didn't anwser, he knew Fortunato was died.
  • "A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form, seemed to thrust me violently back."
  • Fortunato has not been found for 50 or more years. The theme of this story is the need for revenge is a very strong motivator. That is why the internal conflict is Montresor's desire for revenge.The internal conflict was the idea in Montresor's mind making him do these bad things.
