"I must not only punish but punish with impunity."
Rising Action One
"How?" said he. "Amontillado, A pipe? Impossible! And in the middle of the carnival!"
Rising Action 2
"And the motto?"
"Nemo me impune lacessit."
After the death of Fortunato, our Narrator confesses killing him in his vaults.....The setting takes place in 17th century Italy, and it's carnival season. A guy named Fortunato (a connoisseur of wine) has insulted our narrator (Montressor). Now Montressor vows revenge. He says," You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat."
Montressor encounters Fortunato at the carnival. Montressor is dressed up as the grim reeper (about to take Fortunato's life). Fortunato is drunk, sick, and dressed up as a jester. Montressor complements his costume and tells him about the amontillado in his catacomb. Then he uses Luchresi (another wine connoisseur) to manipulate Fortunato to the vaults. Montressor says, My friend, no. It is not the engagement, but the severe cold with which I perceive you are afflicted. The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre." So when he manipulates Fortunato he agrees to the vaults.
"In pace requiescat!"
Once they get to the catacombs the nitre make Fortunato's cold worse. Montressor tells them to go back but Fortunato refuses. However Montressor offers Fortunato Medoc (wine), to help with the cough (but it doesn't really help he's just using it to make him more drunk). Montressor gives Fortunato a toast to his long life, then they keep walking further down the catacombs. MOntressor describes his family to Fortunato, Fortunato ask's fro his arms, and the moto. They are both a sign of death coming soon, but Fortunato doesn't seem to comprehend. They finally end up in the deepest part of the catacombs (there is a small niche built ahead of time).
Montressor tells Fortunato that the Amontilado is inside of the niche and chains him to the wall. However Fortunato still thinks that he'll get amontilado, but then realizes he's being tricked. Montressor finds building stone and uses a trowel to start building a wall in front of Fortunato. Inside pof the niche is was covered in damp nitre which causes Fortunato to get sicker.
Fortunato begins to sober up, and understand what's going on, and Montressor keeps building the wall. Fortunato starts to panic while jangling the chains and screaming, Montressor to mimic him screams back at Fortunato, at this point Fortunato is frightened. Trying to get out he tries to manipulate Montressor, by telling him that what he's doing is a prank, but it doesn't work. On the last block Montressor gets a good look at him, then covers it. Fortunato dies, and Montressor calls his name but no response. The last sound he heard was the jingle of his bells on the hat.
In the end Montessor leaves Fortunato in he catacoms. It's been 50 years and since the death no one has found his body, until Montressor finally confesses.
