  • Head down to the store and pick up these groceries.
  • The Right to the Streets of Memphis by Richard Wright
  • Okay mom!
  • "The next afternoon I looped the basket over my arm and went down the pavement toward the store" (Wright 3).
  • "When I reached the corner, a gang of boys grabbed me, knocked me down, snatched the basket, took the money, and sent me running home in panic" (Wright 3).
  • What's happening?
  • *happens 2x times*
  • “Take this money, this note, and this stick,” she said. “Go to the store and buy those groceries. If those boys bother you, then fight” (Wright 3).
  • Huh?!
  • You're not coming home until you get those groceries. Now fight!
  • I don't want to go, they'll beat me again and steal our money!! Please, let me wait until tomorrow! I'm scared!
  • I'll kill you!
  • "The boys scattered, yelling, nursing their heads, staring at me in utter disbelief" (Wright 4).
