  • I know a union organizer who previously worked in this department
  • I think we should get a union involved!
  • I think so too...

  • What seems to be the problem?
  • Supervisors are lying to staff, saying the instruction to bring all staff back to work was given by top management
  • We are here to discuss all issues, and information which is needed and you will need to be educated on what to do next.
  • Workers come together collectively and decide to recruit other staff and approach a union.
  • Hey Jared, I need some info from you..
  • Hi Samantha, remember we discussed current situation in office? We're in contact with a union...
  • Hi Annalise, yes I know, what do you need from me?
  • Annalise gets into contact with a union organiser with IMATU, Independent Municipal and Allied workers Trade Union and explains the issues and wants to set up a meeting. Siyabonga advises Annalise to form a union committee from selection of members who represent a good cross-section of the company.
  • We need to formulate an issue programme
  • We need to create a mission and vision statement and what we hope to acheive...
  • Let's get to the drawing board
  • A few of the workers who form the union committee meets up with the union organizer. Siyabonga from IMATU, who advises them on what the next steps are. The three members are from represent different departments within the company; shifts; racial and ethnic backgrounds and genders.
  • The committee was then asked to contact employees that they work with and gather information about the workplace structure, including the different departments, work areas, jobs, and shifts. Once the information is gathered, the information of each employee needs to be on a spreadsheet with each person's name, address, phone number, shift, job title, and department.
  • Yo Carl, what's up?
  • The commitee needs to create an issues program, which is the committee's mission statement, and should include the improvements that the committee hopes to accomplish through unionization, for improved working conditions.
