  • The local aristocrats took justice into their own hands, even though the emperor ruled the name.
  • How does that help and hurt the people living there?
  • Isn't Japan a peninsula?
  • No, Japan is a chain of many islands, or an archipelago. Japan also have many volcanoes.
  • The volcanic soils are fertile, which helps farming. Japan is prone to earthquakes.
  • They were friends, but Japan became friends with them so China wouldn't invade their land.
  • Were China and Japan friends?
  • What type of government was used in Japan?
  • The government was more centralized and under military leader. This was known as shogun.
  • No they didn't, the aristocrats did.
  • The women played a major role in Japanese society.
  • Oh, my bad. Maybe I should hit the books more.
  • Yes, and because of his death Japan remained divided up instead of everyone being of equal power under his rule.
  • So Shotoku Taishis died during the Nara Period?
