We use toothbrushes to take care of our teeth. If we didn't use toothbrushes, then our teeth would be rotten, if we even had any left. But there is a problem.
After hundreds of years the toothbrush decomposes into microscopic pieces.
Toothbrushes are ending up in the ocean. But it doesn't stop there! Once it is in the ocean, it makes its way to the Garbage Patch in the Pacific Ocean. There, the toothbrush joins its fellow plastic buddies.
Then there is a fish. He is hungry and the pieces of plastic toothbrush look like food, so he eats it. Suddenly, he's stomach starts to hurt, he gets sick, and the poor little fish that is still hungry, because what he ate wasn't food, died. But he is not the only one, millions die this way!
Luckily, there is a solution. It is called bamboo toothbrushes! These have bamboo handles and the bristles are made out of hair. This is a better solution because bamboo is a plant that can grow fast, unlike wooden trees.
The toothbrush is now natural and not synthetic, so it is easier to get rid of! If it does end up in the ocean, (and eaten by a fish) it won't cause as much harm as the plastic toothbrushes which have a lot of chemicals in it since, there is probably 85% plastic! (The fish will still be hungry, but it might no die!)
