  • Figures of speech
  • begining of story
  • They use "Underground Railroad" to symbolize the paths they took and what the system of stops they used to get to Canada was referred to. This whole "underground Railroad" was used to get slaves to where they could be free.
  • Tone
  • end of sory
  • In stanza 1 it tells on the type of clothing they had on and how they had no shoes and suffered from frostbite.
  • Theme
  • "In the dead of night" this is a metaphor meaning that their was not much of life activity because most people where sleeping at this time.
  • the tone of the story at the begging is sad and weary because of the cold and how they had clothes that was all tattered. But by the end of the story the mood changes to a more determined type mood because of how they are on their way to Canada.
  • the theme of this story to me i think it is to go for what you want no matter the conditions. the reason i think that is because of how their clothes are tattered and their cold but yet they keep going forward.
