  • The black box symbolizes the lottery and it's purpose.  This is a tradition to keep the population from exceeding. Not only do adults participate, but everyone in town does. Everyone gets a lottery ticket; who ever has the lottery ticket with the dot that is who gets stoned to death.

  • "A sudden hush fell on the crowd" (Personification). This is were the drawing for the lottery is taken place. As you can Mr. Summers  is calling from a list he had.
  • The first tone is suspense because we didn't know who was going to die. The second tone chosen was scared/upset because now that we know Tessie is  going to die. She says "it's not fair, it's not right" multiple times. 
  • The theme is tradition; to whereas tradition has been there for the longest and it helps them to keep the population small. The lottery is a very organized tradition. example, the lottery tickets given to the head of either each household or head of each family. In there time, many years before, they had rituals where they would sing songs, "tunelessly".
