Around this time, China was involved in a lot of conflict, both internal and external.
The Panthay Rebellion, Dungan Revolt, Miao Rebellion, Tianjin Massacre, and the Taiping Rebellion are just a few of the events that occurred.
They were lucky because they left in 1875, one year before the Great Northern Chinese Famine.
These events caused Yao Jin and her family to immigrate to America.
Her family went to America by boarding one of Pacific Mail Steamship Company's ships. They decided to stay in the steerage of the ship instead of going to the 1st class area despite her father being a wealthy merchant.
The ride wasn't exactly the best since they were in the steerage. The conditions there are known for being bad. The food was somewhat tolerable and they lacked privacy.
After the journey, they found a place to stay in California. They managed to find an area with other people from China.
Before they arrived, the Panic of 1873 and the Chinese Massacre of 1871 occurred.
2 years later, in 1877, the San Francisco anti-Chinese riot began. The riot only lasted 2 days, July 23-24, but 4 people died. No one in Yao's family was hurt.
