  • Initial Event or Dialogue
  • With uncertainty, Tess replied, "I need a shower..." (Barnes 7).
  • Ivy said, "It's been too long, Tess." (Barnes 7).
  • Propels the Action by...
  • Ivy exclaimed, "The Upper School just added a state-of-the-art robotics lab. And you should see the new gymnasium." (Barnes 27).
  • Outcome
  • Vivvie remarked, "Have you ever known something you deeply wished you didn't know?" (Barnes 110).
  • Tess responded, "I knew that everything would come out eventually, but I thought if I just fought hard enough..." (Barnes 110).
  • Tess Kendrick is living with her grandfather, not realizing his growing struggle with dementia. In a turn of events, her sister Ivy returns to their ranch in Montana, a surprise for Tess - as Ivy hasn't been home in awhile. However, Ivy isn't here to reminisce, and Tess finds that out soon.
  • Initial Event or Dialogue
  • Henry exclaimed, "I have reason to believe that the White House is covering it up... Now... who's your source?" (Barnes 256).
  • Ivy takes her grandfather to a treatment center in Boston, and moves Tess to Washington D.C. In addition to the influential depart, Ivy also enrolls her sister in Hardwicke School - a school boasting with the children of top Washington officials. With the move, Tess will enter a new world - a new community, new school, and a new take on life.
  • Propels the Action by...
  • Ivy stated, "I told you I wasn't letting you do this yourself..." (Barnes 273).
  • Growing accustomed to life in the Capital, Tess makes some new friends - one of them her best friend, Vivvie. Vivvie and Tess survive through days of school at Hardwicke, and as time passes, Tess meets other people at the school. As she continues to grow and break into her new life, Tess and Vivvie begin to uncover a Washington scandal - involving Vivvie's father.
  • Outcome
  • Ivy muttered, "You can't do this..." (Barnes 287).
  • Tess and Henry Marquette have been interrogating Carson Dweck, in the possible case of Henry's grandfather's death. The pair believes that Dweck was responsible for publishing a piece in the newspaper that shone a light on Judge Pierce's possible nomination.
  • The interrogation excites Henry, and he sets out to find more information about the piece. Setting out to find more information on the source, Henry finds himself attending a state dinner in order to locate Carson's source. Feeling obligated to accompany him, Tess also makes the trip, pulling some strings to get there.
  • With fury, Henry demanded, "What are you doing here?" (Barnes 273)
  • Ivy catches Tess at the state dinner, and is extremely angry at Tess' unwillingness to back down from her current activities. Ivy had repeatedly told Tess to stop investigating Justice Marquette's death, and Tess failed to listen. With fury in her veins, Ivy boots Tess off to Boston with her grandfather - removing her from DC, and from the journey she had set forth on.
