A man named Framton Nuttel moved to the countryside following his doctor's advice. He visits one of his sister’s acquaintances named Mrs. Sappleton. While waiting for her, 15 year old Vera keeps him company.
My aunt will be down presently, Mr. Nuttel.
Do you know many of the people round here?
Hardly a soul. My sister was staying here at the rectory, some 4 years ago and she gave letters of introduction to some of the people here.
When Vera realized that Mr. Nuttel knows little to nothing about her aunt, she directs his attention to the open window. She tells him a story claiming her aunt's 2 brothers and her husband dissaperared 3 years ago on a shooting day.
Her tragedy happened just 3 years ago.
After Vera ended her story the aunt bustled into the room, apologizing for her late appearance. The aunt acknowledged the open window which shocked Mr. Nuttel.
I hope you don't mind the open window , my brothers and husband will be home directly from the shooting.
As they were talking, Mrs. Sappleton noticed 3 figures approaching the window. She acknowledged these figures which frightened Mr. Nuttel.
Here they are at last! Just in time for tea, and don't they look as if they were muddy up to the eyes.
