Hi I'm Wally the water molecule! One day when I was relaxing in Pittock Lake I was collected and taken to Woodstock Water Treatment Facility.
When we arrived at the Water Treatment Facility I was immediately mixed with chemicals known as coagulants that caused me to clump together with other water molecules.
Then I was mixed again so that a precipitate would form and sink to the bottom. This process was called flocculation and sedimentation.
After that I was filtered and wow did I feel cleansed! I travelled through filters made up of layers of sand and carbon in order to remove any biological impurities like bacteria, dirt, and viruses.
The filtration had me feeling very clean and pure but they pumped me full of more chemicals in the disinfecting, aeration, and softening processes.
In softening I was treated with a phosphate to reduce my hardness. In aeration I was mixed with other substances like oxygen and chlorine dioxide to reduce taste and colour issues. In disinfection chlorine was added to kill microorganisms. It was a lot for me to go through!
Next they added fluoride in with me because I guess the people that live in the city I am going to need stronger tooth enamel.
Ammonia also had to be mixed in with me in order to keep the chlorine dissolved in me for long periods of time. Ammonia also prevents chlorine from evaporating and causing bad taste and smell when people drink me.
A final chlorine disinfectant was added to kill any leftover microorganisms and my pH was changed to be slightly basic so that I do not corrode any metal pipes on my journey.
Finally I have been fully treated and I am safe to drink! My journey was long and complex but I have made it to the tap ready to quench someones thirst!
