as Dally is driving Johnny and Ponyboy to get some food, Johnny tells Dally that he wants to turn himself in, he wants to go home and admit to the crime. Dally is caught off guard and tries to change his mind telling him stuff like what might happen to him in prison and that he doesn't want him to turn out like he did.
As Dally is taking them home they pass the church and see that it is a blaze of fire and both think that they might have caused the fire with a cigarette butt but as they get to the church they notice elementary children and someone scream that there missing some and Pony hears yelling from the church so him and Johnny go in and save them but as Johnny is getting out of the church the ceiling collapses on him and injures his spine.
Ponyboy gets knocked out by Dallas when he goes to help Johnny and Dally clubs him so he doesn't go in the church again. Ponyboy wakes up in the back of an ambulance.
While in the ambulance with a school teacher, Jerry Wood, he is told that his back caught on fire but the only thing that kept him alive was the jacket on his back that Dally gave him.
As they are getting into town, Jerry wood tells him that Dally is a little burned out but he'll be fine, he said that Johnny got the worst of it, from the piece of timber that fell on his back.
While still in the ambulance, Jerry Wood asks if they are natural born heroes and Pony says no, there just juvenile delinquents. The man also told him that they were gonna be in the paper as heroes.
