I, John Dalton, an English schoolteacher, have come up with an atomic theory that seems to explain the concept of atoms!
First, all matter is composed of extremely small particles called atoms.
I'm an atom! Well, I'm not actually this big, but I'm still an atom!
Secondly, atoms of a given element are identical in size, mass, and other properties; atoms of different elements differ in size, shape, and other properties.
We're different from you guys, up there!
We're all the same!
Thirdly, atoms cannot be subdivided, created, or destroyed.
I'm as small as it gets and you can't create or destroy me!
Fourth of all, atoms of different elements combine in simple whole-number ratios to form chemical compounds.
Together, we make CO2, carbon dioxide!
Finally, in chemical reactions, atoms are combined, separated, or rearranged.
Put us oxygen atoms in a chemical reaction with carbon, and we'll make carbon dioxide!
