The bathroom was smelly and damp but Adeline felt safe. No one could get at her. Adeline finally had some privacy. No prying eyes, spiteful remarks, pitying glances. She was alone with her beloved books. What bliss!
Pathetic refugee outfit
Adeline heard the voices of Irene Tan and Elanor Lui. They were trying on new dresses, hair bands and ribbons, smiling at their reflections in the full-length bathroom mirror.
Do I actually look like a refugee?
All of a sudden the girls started a conversation about Adeline and an incident that happened that morning. Out of the blue Irene asked 'Why did you do it?.' 'I thought Adeline might want an egg for breakfast. My number is 31 and hers is 37, so I sneaked into the kitchen and changed the 1 into a 7. I thought Adeline might get a kick from getting her number called out, I didn't know she doesn't like eggs! All I'm aware is that she gets neither eggs nor visited on Sunday!'
At least it fits
'They say that Adeline is brilliant but, to me, she rather pathetic too. Rushing around in that infantile brown dress looking like a refugee. She never gets letters but is always first in line when the mail is delivered' rambled Irene. The lunch bell rang and the two girls scurried off.
Adeline waited a little while and opened her door just a crack to check that there was no one around. Luckily all the grisl had left to lunch. In the bathroom mirror Adeline looked at herself while washing her hands, full of inarticle emotion, she thought to herself 'Who am I kidding, the whole world knows of my eggless state, some even feel sorry for me.' Making her feel more and more upset
She looked down with distance at her shrunken brown dress too sizes too small... Adelines 'refugee costume'! She decided it was better to change back into her school uniform before joining her peers for lunch, at the very least it fitted her better.
