Life has not been amazing in the "Promised Land." I have great work on the railroad, but at what cost?
Go back to where you came from!
The Chinese immigrants have faced major hostility from the Americans. They assault us and drive us out of their communities.
Stop stealing our jobs!
I am heartbroken that I cannot return home as the new legislation prevents any Chinese immigration. Will they push us out next? I am living in constant fear. All I wanted was opportunity, to return home with more wealth and experience.
I remember my time coming to this country. Angel Island was already in place and while I did not appreciate the extra measures simply for being Chinese, I was looking forward to joining the land of opportunity.
Now, I realize American is not the promised land for all, only for the lucky. I work long hours in dangerous conditions, only to come home to a rundown slum in Chinatown. The Americans harass us all day long. I wish I could return home.
It has really become us versus them, with us doing no wrong. I leave with the final message, that America is only the promise land for some.
