I know you have father, and you too mother, but it's the ceremony that I'm apprehensive about.
Oh look! Isn't he cute? Look how tiny he is! And he has funny eyes like yours, Jonas!
The Giver By: Lois Lowry
Jonas tells his mom and dad why he feels apprehensive. Turns out it is because the ceremony of the twelve is coming up.
It's just that I don't know your name. I thought you were The Receiver, but you say that I'm The Receive. So I don't know what to call you.
Call me the giver.
Jonas's father brings home the child he keeps talking about, Gabriel. Lily notices that he has the same light pigmented eyes like her brother Jonas has.
Jonas is scared and confused why the Chief Elder has skipped him during the Ceremony of the Twelve. Did she skip him purposely? Turns out, Jonas was assigned a really important job, receiver of memory.
Jonas finally starts his training as the new receiver of memory. At the end of his visit to the old receiver of memory, he is confused what to call the man. The old receiver tells him to call him The Giver.
Jonas and Gabriel escape from the community and get to see the outside world. They get to see snow and Jonas shows Gabe a little snowflake. In the end, Jonas and Gabe ride a sled down a hill to a weird place. Then, they hear music.
