Setting Jessica's story, in the novel The Running Dream, takes place in California, modern day time. Jessica spends most of her time at the hospital or the track. Antagonist Jessica plays both the protagonist and antagonist roles. She is her own worst enemy.
Birth & Origin Jessica is a 16 year old girl that is known at her school for running. On the way home from a track meet her school bus got hit by a semi. Jessica had to get her leg amputated, but her friends find a way to make her run again. Jessica had a hard time coping with this and would have never gotten through it without help from her best-friend Fiona, her parents, her track coach, or a disabled girl she befriends named Rosa.
Hero's Flaw, Hero's Struggle Jessica's flaw is her missing leg. From first coping with the amputation to therapy to getting fitted for her prosthetic leg, her missing limb has been the focal point of the book. Her struggle has been simply not running. Running is Jessica's life, and not running or seeing her track team run is killing her.
