  • exposition
  • What was that?
  • Guess it was a meteor, honey!
  • conflict
  • That kid shouldn't talk that way... and we shouldn't stand here and listening to him!
  • Tommy, please, son... honey, don't talk that way-
  • They looked just like humans.  And it wasn't until the ship landed that-
  • It started own its own.  I swear! Y'all saw it!!
  • rising action
  • Lets not be a mob!!
  • The story takes place on Maple Street in a typical, small town in America.  On Maple Street, the residents see a flash of light and believe it to be a meteor.  This flash of light seems to stop everything from working: cars, telephones, and radios.
  • rising action
  • I'm surprised at you, Charlie. How come you're so dense all of a sudden?
  • Prior to the mysterious power-outage, Pete Van Horn goes to the street over to see if their power has also gone out.  After trying to start his car, Steve and Charlie go to the police station to discuss their situation.  They are stopped by Tommy who begins to tell them about comics books and movies he has seen about this event.  His mom eventually gets embarrassed because no one is believing his stories.
  • climax
  • Shortly after Tommy's stories are ended, Les Goodman tries to start his car, but he has no luck with that either.  As he walks up to the group, his car suddenly starts with no one in it.  The group immediately accuses Les of being one of the aliens from Tommy's story.   They approach him in a mob, but Steve tells them not to.  Les claims that he goes out on his porch late at night because he has insomnia, but the neighborhood still thinks he's an alien.
  • resolution
  • Your car is the only thing that works on this street, why is that?!
  • The whole neighborhood is on edge after Les' car starts on its own.  They are all watching Les when Charlie begins to accuse Steve of being suspicious.  Steve has a ham radio set in his basement and Charlie thinks that he uses it to communicate with the monsters.  After arguing for a few minutes, a dark figure begins to approach them from the distance.
  • What kind of "radio set" you workin' on? I never seen it. Neither has anyone else
  • The dark figure happens to be Pete Van Horn returning from the street over, but the people of Maple Street have no idea it's him.  They think he is a monster, so Charlie grabs a gun and shoots at the figure.  When they approach the figure they realize it is Pete Van Horn, and then the lights in Charlie's house start flashing on and off.
  • The group throws rocks at Charlie until he blame Tommy of being the monster. Eventually the whole neighborhood turns against each other and destroys most things around them.  That's when the seen disapears and the real aliens discuss why they did what they did and the effects it had on the people.
  • With few variations. They pick the most dangerous enemy they can find...and it's themselves. And all we need do is sit back...and watch.
  • Understand the procedure now? Just stop a few of their machines and radios and telephones and lawn mowers...throw them into darkness for a few hours and then you just sit back and watch the pattern.
  • And this pattern is always the same?
