  • "Five score years ago a great American in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation .This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice." (King)
  • PATHOS
  • "There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality."(King)
  • LOGOS
  •  "Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds."(King)
  • Martin Luther King Jr. is using ethos by showing us how the Emancipation Proclamation supports their rights and was a light for the slaves. 
  • ETHOS
  • "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”(King)
  • King is using Pathos by telling us some of the hardships of what the colored people have gone through. He is saying he will never be satisfied until justice is served for his people.
  • PATHOS
  • "I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification ,one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers."(King)
  • Logos is used in this quote by discussing how the Declaration Of Independence had not honored their rights and it is clearly shown today. The people's rights are not being given to them like the Declaration of Independence promised.
  • LOGOS
  • "We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote"(King)
  • This quote is an example of pathos because he is using an important American quote to support his dream. By doing this he is proving that America needs to stand by all men being equal.
  • King is using pathos in this quote by making our hearts feel the vicious things he says these people are doing. It is also pathos because he is telling us his dream for the future and how great it could be.
  • This quote is an example of logos being it is telling the facts of how the people are not allowed to vote. He is saying the people will not be satisfied until they are able to feel and be able to vote.
