"The Kite Runner" begins in 2001, with the main character, Amir, having a flashback to 1975, in Kabul, Afghanistan. From there, the reader is introduced to other characters, while learning more about Amir's childhood. Afterwards, the reader finds out Amir didn't help Hassan out in the alley, when Assef raped Hassan. Amir betrays Hassan once more by telling Baba, Hassan stole his watch in order to feel less pain and guilt over his actions.
We then fast forward to Amir being eighteen. At the time, Baba and him emigrate to the U.S. Eventually, Amir marries a young Afghan girl, shorty after their wedding, Baba dies of cancer. Rahim Khan calls Amir to ask him to return to Pakistan. Once Amir returns, Rahim Khan tells Amir about Hassan being killed and having left a son named Sohrab. He also informs Amir that Hassan is his half-brother. Rahim Kahn asks to Amir to get Sohrab from a orphanage to bring him back to take him to a better orphanage.
an Amir sets off to Kabul, Afghanistan, to find Sohrab. However, Amir finds out that a man took Sohrab who usually takes out girls and sometimes boys. Amir finds that the man who took Sohrab is Assef. Assef has been physically and mentally hurting Sohrab. Assef tells Amir the only way for him to win his and Sohrab's freedom is by fighting him. Assef almosts kills Amir but, Sohrab intervenes before it occurs. Sohrab slingshots a brass ball into Assef's eye. Amir then decides to adopt Sohrab because there's no orphanage Rhaim Khan told Amir about. However, when there might be a chance Sohrab may have to go back to an orpahnge, due to an adoptaion ot be Sohrab attempts to kill himself.
