Women are fragile and delicate beings that are incapable of dealing with serious situations, and need the guidance of a man both mentally and morally.
I was so exhausted by all I'd been through my-nerves broke. [Nervously tamping cigarette] I was on the verge of-lunacy, aImostl So Mr. Graves--Mr. Graves is the high school Superintendent-he suggested I take a leave of absence. couldn't put all of those delluls into the wire ... [She dnnks qUickly] Oh, this buzzes right through me and feels so goodl (Scene 1)
Williams tries to use Blance to exhibit the fragile mental state of women, and show that she isnt capable of holding down a job and being productive without a man.
BLANCHE: Why are you looking at me like that? Is something wrong with me? -- EUNICE: You look wonderful, Blanche. Don't she look wonderful? STELLA: Yes. EUNICE: I understand you are going on a trip. STBLLA: Yes, Blanche is. She's going on a vacation. EUNICB: I'm green with envy. BLANCHE: Help me, help me get dressed. Scene 11
Williams is saying that women are materialistic and shallow, and although Blanche can sense that something is afoot she can't focus, because she is too busy being showered with compliments and talking about clothes.
These two excerpts reveal how williams and society as a whole viewed women. They were seen as needing the guiding hand of a man in their life, and unfortunately Blanche seems to have all of the attributes that led to this stereotype.
