  • Chris's young life living at home.

  • Feeling of being left out of family and keeping his sad emotions to himself
  • Chris before his trip
  • I'm completely alone now
  • Westerberg and Chris talking in a bar where they first met.
  • "He seemed mad at us more often, and he became more withdrawn-no, that's not the right word. Chris wasn't withdrawn. But he wouldn't tell us what was on his mind and spent more time by himself." (p.121) This shows that Chris having a hard childhood which lead to him growing up to be the person he was. He let emotions get to him and he thought about things too much.
  • "A pathetic little stack of ones and fives and twenties- and put a match to it. One hundred twenty three dollars in legal tender was promptly reduced to ash... After loading his few remaining possessions into a backpack, McCandless hiked out of Lake Mead" (P.29) Showing Chris's impulsive personality that possibly lead to his death.
  • Chris hitchhiking with a man to Alaska. The man thinks he isn't prepared for his trip.
  • "You could tell right away that Alex was intelligent, Westerberg reflects... 'He read a lot. Used a lot of big words. I think maybe part of what got him in trouble was that he did too much thinking... He got stuck on things." (p.18) *Chris looked up to Westerberg* This shows that Chris had a problem in not being able to move on, which could have lead to him being stuck at the bus in which he died in
  • Chris's body found in Alaska
  • Is this guy might not survive out there
  • "I told him that a 22 wouldn't do anything to a grizzly except make him mad. Alex didn't seem too worried.' I'll climb a tree' Is all he said."
  • "Alec's backpack looked as though it weighed only twenty-five or thirty pounds, which struck Gallien- an accomplished hunter and woodsman -improbably light load for a stay of several months."(p.4) This shows that Chris wasnt prepared to go out into the wild in Alaska and shows his unsafe personality.
  • "A young man from an well-to-do East Coast family Hitcchiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. Four months later his decomposed body was found by a party of moose hunters" pg. 1
