Feeling of being left out of family and keeping his sad emotions to himself
Chris before his trip
I'm completely alone now
Westerberg and Chris talking in a bar where they first met.
"He seemed mad at us more often, and he became more withdrawn-no, that's not the right word. Chris wasn't withdrawn. But he wouldn't tell us what was on his mind and spent more time by himself." (p.121) This shows that Chris having a hard childhood which lead to him growing up to be the person he was. He let emotions get to him and he thought about things too much.
"A pathetic little stack of ones and fives and twenties- and put a match to it. One hundred twenty three dollars in legal tender was promptly reduced to ash... After loading his few remaining possessions into a backpack, McCandless hiked out of Lake Mead" (P.29) Showing Chris's impulsive personality that possibly lead to his death.
Chris hitchhiking with a man to Alaska. The man thinks he isn't prepared for his trip.
"You could tell right away that Alex was intelligent, Westerberg reflects... 'He read a lot. Used a lot of big words. I think maybe part of what got him in trouble was that he did too much thinking... He got stuck on things." (p.18) *Chris looked up to Westerberg* This shows that Chris had a problem in not being able to move on, which could have lead to him being stuck at the bus in which he died in
Chris's body found in Alaska
Is this guy might not survive out there
"I told him that a 22 wouldn't do anything to a grizzly except make him mad. Alex didn't seem too worried.' I'll climb a tree' Is all he said."
"Alec's backpack looked as though it weighed only twenty-five or thirty pounds, which struck Gallien- an accomplished hunter and woodsman -improbably light load for a stay of several months."(p.4) This shows that Chris wasnt prepared to go out into the wild in Alaska and shows his unsafe personality.
"A young man from an well-to-do East Coast family Hitcchiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. Four months later his decomposed body was found by a party of moose hunters" pg. 1
