When Historians examine the past, they look for patterns. They also look for clues that explain why and how that event happened. To do so, they put themselves in people of the past's place and unlock more information about human nature. Doing this helps them answer important historical questions!
Understanding the Past
Native Americans used pottery for various purposes including cooking.
What questions do Historians have yet to answer?
The Historians Tools
Historians have tools that help them research and answer their question. Their tools include Primary Sources (written or told by someone who experienced it), Secondary Sources (written or told by someone who didn't experience it), and Oral History (something told by someone that gets passed down).
Who catogorized these sources into these groups?
I am a Primary Source because I experienced the Battle of Gettysburg. It was so sad....
How Knowledge of the Past Changes
Historians use evidence ot answer questions. They sort through the evidence and find what they can trust, and what is important. Sometimes information turns out to be false like the "mummy's curse". They proved it false by sorting through the evidence.
What other false information has been spread?
Knowing that flowers can come in a variety of colors does not help us figure out how many species there are!
