It was April, and outside in the dark the rain whipped against the windows of our tavern. We were all concentrating on our dinner, and jumped when suddenly, the door slammed open and banged against the wall. Mt brother Sam stood there in a uniform looking proud. We hadn't seen him since Christmas.
Sam tells me that he is to join the army, and fight to drive the British out of the colonies. But to join the patriot army, he needs a gun and says he will ask father for the brown bess, the family gun. But when father refuses, Sam won't take "no" for an answer. Later, when father is sleeping, Sam sneaks into the house and steals the brown bess and sneaks over to Betsy Read's house. I find him there, and he swears me to secracy.
Later that year, Betsy Read informs me that Sam is back. I want to go visit him immediately, but father might get suspicious, so I wait for a while. Soon, I hear shouting from the tavern. I spy inside, and figure out that rebel officers are threatening father for the Brown Bess. I have to save father, so I sneak over to Betsy's house to take the Brown Bess from Sam to give to the rebel officers. But before I can go back to the tavern, Sam catches me. I threaten to shoot him but just can't. Sam agrees to go with me, but in secret. When we arrive, we discover father is safe, but Sam runs away before father can say he forgives him.
