  • Alright class. Today we are going to discuss constitutionalism.
  • Does anyone have any prior knowledge on constitutionalism?
  • Is it about oranges?
  • NO! Take out your notebooks.
  • Constitutionalism is the idea that the government can't and should be legally limited in it's power. Also, that it's authority or legitimacy depends on it's observing these limitations.
  • what are the limitations?
  • A key factor of constitutionalism is that this basic framework cannot easily be changed because of the wishes of a transient majority. It requires the consent of the governed expressed in a clear and unambiguous manner.
  • Constitutionalism is federal laws of the united states government which are consistent with the U.S. constitution. It restricts the amount of the power the government has over the nation. It's like, limiting the amount of ice cream scoop to three instead of one thousand.
  • The last thing we need to cover is how constitutionalism relates to the three themes of democracy. The first theme is that in a democracy the ultimate source of all authority is the people. This applies to constitutional because the purpose of constitutionalism is to make sure that the government does not hold all the power.
  • The second theme is a division of power. Constitutionalism divides federal power and states power. Finally, the third theme is the right of individuals and of minorities must be respected. This applies because it controls the government becoming a tyranny or dictatorship.
