Storyboard Text

  • After Two Months as president...
  • I order federal troops in Louisiana and south Carolina to return to their bases
  • The last two states occupied with troops were Louisiana and South Carolina, but not anymore. No more active intervening within the politics of the states!
  • REMOVAL OF TROOPS= THE END OF RECONSTRUCTION
  • The removal of the federal soldiers was a major political turning point, It meant the end of the republicans commitment of protecting the civil and political rights of African Americans.
  • Home-rule meant that the Republicans would refrain from interfering in the South’s local affairs. Also intended that white Democrats, many of them racist, would end up ruling.
  • Now we home-rule
  • They abandoned the last remnant of support they had for equal rights of blacks. Not my business.
  • Mhmm.. sure
  • The aftermath: The promise was broken. Rapidly laws with segregation and disfranchisement of voting were passed.
  • I pledge to, "“recognize the civil and political equality of blacks.”
