"No-i seem to remember hearing that name- Eva Smith-somewhere"
"And why did you do that?"
"Because i was in a furious temper"
laughs rather hysterically... "why-you fool-he knows Of course he knows."
The inspector has just arrived to question Mr Birling about any involvement with Eva smith and her death.
"To do my duty"
"Not yet. I'm waiting"
"waiting for what"
"Certainly. i consider it your duty. And now no doubt you'd like to say good night."
Not having much luck to find out the whole truth from Birling, the inspector turns to his daughter; sheila for a better insight.
"Yes, we know"
"You know don't you?"
"Eric i can't believe it"
He looks crushed...The atmosphere becomes tense when sheila and Gerald have a discussion and the inspector enters only using one word. "well?"
"Then they will be taught it in fire and blood and anguish. Goodnight."
The inspector manipulates Mrs Birling , he does this by making her believe shes in control of the situation but she ends up accidentally condemning Eric into a public confession.
Eric's dramatic entrance leaves the dining room silenced and Eric realizes that they've figured out that he's the father of Eva smiths child and Mrs Birling realises what shes caused.
"Its a good job for him doesn't, isn't it?"
"But just remember this. One Eva Smith has gone- but there are millions and millions and millions of Eva Smiths and John smiths still left with us, with their lives, their hopes and fears, their suffering, and chance of happiness, all intertwined, with our lives, with what we think and say and do. we don't live alone. we are members of one body. we are responsible for each other. and i tell you that the time will soon come when, if men will not learn that lesson. Inspector exists.
