Storyboard Text

  • Northern Free States: Feelings about state additions?
  • I love expansion... but only when it benefits me!
  • Northern Free States: Feelings about the 36°30′ line?
  • I quite like this line!
  • Northern Free States: Who was involved?
  • Benjamin Tallmadge, Abe Lincoln, and myself truly have made a difference for the North.
  • Originally, manifest destiny was nation wide and the north wanted expansion for the purpose of spreading the power of the U.S. However, as a result of sectionalism, the Northerners started to only support state additions that would create free states. In other words, they wanted to have more power in congress and be able to spread the manufacturing lifestyle.
  • Southern Slave States: Feelings about state additions?
  • It is crucial that we spread slavery into the new states that we annex!
  • The Northern Free States liked this line because there were more lines above it than below it. Since the compromise explained, that all of the states above the line would be free states. This would give the north more power, hence they liked this line.
  • Southern Slave States: Feelings about the 36°30′ line?
  • This line just does not seem fair!
  • John W. Taylor, Benjamin Tallmadge, Abraham Lincoln
  • Southern Slave States: Who was involved?
  • What would the South do without Stephen Douglas and myself?
  • The same situation occurred with the South focusing on sectionalism. They wanted to only add slave states because they had a political agenda to overpower the north in congress and an economical agenda to spread slavery and an agricultural lifestyle.
  • The new rule stated that all states above the line could not be slave states and that those below the line could be slave states but did not have to. Southerners disliked this line because there was less land below the line than above it. In other words, it was possible that the Southern states would be overpowered.
  • Stephen Douglas, Millard Fillmore
