  • Call To Adventure
  • Threshold
  • Guardians/Helpers/Mentors
  • In the novel, The Hunger Games, the plot takes place in Panem, a country that is divided into twelve districts. An annual event, known as the Hunger Games, is held, where children battle to the death and the victor is then able to return home. In the beginning of this book, Primrose, the sister of Katniss Everdeen, is unfortunately selected to participate in the Hunger Games. However, Katniss volunteers to take her sister's place. Katniss, the hero, completes "the call' in the hero's journey because her involvement with the Hunger Games is an invitation to an adventure, in which she is given the opportunity to face the unknown and to gain new knowledge.
  • Physical/Mental Challenge #1
  • I don't think she's here.
  • You BETTER be correct, if not, we'll kill you!
  • After the reaping, Katniss and Peeta, her fellow partner, leave their homes in District 12 and enter the capital, where they are prepared for the event. District 12 was the known world because they have lived there their whole lives, understanding how society functions in this part of Panem. The capital and arena is the unknown world because that is where the dangerous obstacles lie. Katniss passes over the Threshold in her journey because she is leaving the known world and entering the unknown. Additionally, Haymitch is the threshold guardian because he guides her through entire event.
  • Physical/Mental Challenge #2
  • Before entering the arena and during the games, Katniss encounters many who become her mentors and helpers. Her mentors include Cinna, the stylist, Effie, the District 12 escort, and Haymitch, a former Hunger Games victor. They all aid Katniss, expanding her knowledge of the game and preparing her for the difficult challenges. Helpers of Katniss are Peeta and Rue. They both help her deal with the obstacles during the game.
  • Temptations
  • Prim...I need to come back for Prim!
  • One of the many challenges Katniss faces is surviving the game in general. She must avoid the other tributes, while fending for herself. Katniss has to find shelter, food, and water, while staying clear of the others, since they crave blood. It is a physical challenge because she has to use her hunting skills to survive in the wild. It is also a mental challenge because it takes determination, perseverance, and cleverness to stay out of harm. Even so, Katniss is injured along the way.
  • Another challenge she has is taking care of her ally, Rue. Rue is very similar to her sister, Prim, who she cares for deeply. Due to this, Katniss tries her best to keep her safe. This is a physical challenge because Katniss must find food, while fending her off from the other tributes. However, not soon, Rue is killed, which lead to the mental challenge. Rue's death had quite an impact on Katniss, which leads her to crave for revenge and the desire to win the game, in honor of Rue.
  • During her journey, Katniss has very few temptations. One would be to give up and accept her fate in losing the game. Hunger and injuries played an important role in this because Katniss doubted her survival. However, the thought of fighting and returning for her sister, Prim, motivated her to try harder.
