When I first read this, I was surprised that Tom did not blow Karen's cover. This made me think that Tom had some kind of notion that something beyond the car accident occurred that night involving Karen.
Oh yea...we aren't missing any gloves
What's important is that the tire tracks on those gloves match the tires of your wife's car.
How could Karen lie about this!
By this point I felt as though detective Rasbach is inferring that Karen killed the man the night of her accident. I also though that Karen genuinely had no clue as to what had occurred that night after the accident.
I have no idea what you are talking about
A man was shot three times (...) We know that your car was near the urder scene. We were rather hoping that you could fill us in.
Don't you want to know who was murdered? Or do you know already?
Because Karen cannot remember what happened after the car crash that night, she is trying to come up with any reasons as to why she would be at the murder scene and Tom is doing his best to believe her despite the convincing evidence against her.
Maybe someone hijacked my car, and made me wait there, as a get away driver
Thats possible, isnt it?
How do you explain your car being near the scene?
Thank you for your time
When detective Rasbach leaves, I think he feels as though he got his message across strongly. I also think that he wants to get time one on one with Tom to find out what he is really thinking.
How am I going to explain this to tom?!
Thank you for your time
What the hell happened that night?
Tom has been waiting to unleash all of his questions onto Karen, and it comes across as though he sees her to be some kind of criminal. Karen responds with all that she knows, which in this case is nothing. She is completely unaware of what occured that night.
I don't know! Do you really think I'm capable of killing someone?
Whether you remember it or not, those are probably your gloves, and we both know it. At a murder scene. Why were you at a murder scene Karen?
This moment is the start of the downfall of Karen's relationship with Tom. As the story continues they trust each other less and end up being completely blind-sided by each-other.
You don't know what happened so why cant you believe that I'm innocent in all this?
The police come in here, accusing you . . . you lie in front of them . . . I don't know, Karen. I love you. But I'm scared.
